In 1982, Davis was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the Major League Baseball (MLB) amateur draft. He spent his entire 8-year career playing first base for the Mariners. Davis quickly became a fan favorite, earning the nickname "Mr. Mariner." He had a stellar rookie season in 1984, earning the American League Rookie of the Year award, and hitting a .284 batting average, with 27 home runs and 116 runs batted in.
