Thornton started his baseball career after he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1967, but he was later traded to the Atlanta Braves in 1972. However, it was with the Cleveland Indians, where he played from 1977 to 1987, that Thornton experienced his most successful years in the Major Leagues. In 1982, he had his best season with a .286 batting average, 32 home runs, and 116 RBIs.

Throughout his career, Thornton was known for his great work ethic and his leadership skills. After he retired from baseball, he became an investor in several businesses and a motivational speaker.
