Andy Benes Autographs
Andy Benes is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher who played for the San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, St. Louis Cardinals, and Arizona Diamondbacks. He was born on August 20, 1967, in Evansville, Indiana. Benes was a top-rated baseball player during his high school years and was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1985 draft. However, he decided to attend the University of Evansville instead and played collegiate baseball for the Purple Aces.
After finishing his college career, Andy Benes was selected by the San Diego Padres as the first overall pick in the 1988 MLB draft. He made his debut for the Padres in 1989 and quickly became one of the best young pitchers in the league. During his time in San Diego, Benes was a two-time All-Star and helped lead the team to their first-ever World Series appearance in 1998. In 1995, he led the National League in strikeouts with 189 and finished third in the Cy Young Award voting.
Benes played for a total of 14 seasons in the MLB and finished his career with a record of 155-139, 3.97 ERA, and 2,000 strikeouts. He retired in 2002 after spending his final two years with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Benes is remembered as a dominant pitcher during his heyday and as someone who worked tirelessly to perfect his craft. He was inducted into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009, capping off an illustrious career in the game he loved.
