Art Johnson Autographs
Art Johnson was an American baseball player born on May 17, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois. He began his professional baseball career in 1948, playing for the Chicago American Giants of the Negro American League. Johnson was a left-handed pitcher known for his outstanding fastball and curveball. He played for several teams during his career, including the Chicago Cubs, the Baltimore Orioles, and the Milwaukee Braves.
Johnson's best season came in 1954 when he was playing for the Baltimore Orioles. He went 11-6 with a 2.65 ERA, and he led the American League in strikeouts with 186. He also earned a spot on the American League All-Star team that year. However, Johnson struggled with arm injuries throughout his career, and he retired from baseball in 1958 with a record of 33-39 and a 3.97 ERA.
After retiring from baseball, Johnson returned to Chicago and worked for the United States Postal Service. He remained involved in baseball, coaching youth teams and participating in charity events. Johnson passed away on January 15, 1998, at the age of 68. He is remembered as one of the top pitchers of the Negro American League and a talented player who could have had an even greater career if not for his injuries.
