Austin Nola's professional career began in 2012 when he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Miami Marlins. He spent six seasons in the Marlins' minor league system before finally making his major league debut in June 2019. Nola played in 20 games that season, primarily as a catcher, and recorded a batting average of .273. In August 2020, he was traded to the Seattle Mariners, where he played in 29 games and hit .306 with five home runs and 19 runs batted in. His strong performance in Seattle caught the eye of the San Diego Padres, who acquired him in a trade in August 2021.
