Babe Phelps Autographs
Babe Phelps was a professional baseball catcher who played in the Major Leagues from 1928 to 1939. Known for his powerful throwing arm and solid defensive skills, Phelps played for a number of teams throughout his career, including the Brooklyn Dodgers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Washington Nationals. He was also known for his hitting ability, and finished his career with a .264 batting average and 76 home runs.
Phelps was born on August 2, 1908 in Odenton, Maryland, and began playing baseball in the local sandlots as a child. He was scouted by the Brooklyn Dodgers while playing for a semi-professional team, and eventually made his major league debut with the team in 1928. Phelps quickly established himself as a reliable catcher, and went on to play in more than 1,000 games over the course of his career.
Despite his success on the field, Phelps faced discrimination as a result of his race. He was one of only a handful of African American players in the Major Leagues during his time, and was often subjected to racial taunts and abuse from fans and fellow players. Despite this, Phelps remained focused on his career, and continued to play at a high level until his retirement in 1939. He passed away in 1992 at the age of 84, and is remembered as one of the great catchers of his era.
