Bill Almon was born on November 21, 1952, in Providence, Rhode Island. He was an American professional baseball player and played in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a shortstop and third baseman. Almon was drafted first overall by the San Diego Padres in the 1974 MLB Draft, making him the first player to be chosen first overall in the draft history. Almon spent his first five seasons of his career with the San Diego Padres, where he played both shortstop and third base. In the 1977 season, he set his career-high of 11 home runs, which helped him to earn a spot on the National League All-Star team in 1978. After his time with the Padres, he played for the Montreal Expos, New York Mets, Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Philadelphia Phillies.
