Bill CampbellBill Campbell was a professional baseball player who was born on August 9, 1948, in Highland Park, Michigan. He played as a relief pitcher for several teams in the Major League Baseball (MLB) between 1973 and 1987, including the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago Cubs. Campbell was known for his sinkerball pitch, which he used to get ground-ball outs.
Campbell's best season came in 1977 when he played for the Minnesota Twins. He appeared in 78 games that season, which was the most appearances by a pitcher in the American League that year. Campbell finished the season with a 17-5 record, 20 saves, and a 3.01 ERA. He was selected to the All-Star team and finished fifth in the Cy Young Award voting. Campbell's performance helped lead the Twins to the American League Championship Series.
After retiring from baseball, Campbell became a pitching coach for the Philadelphia Phillies and later worked as a consultant for several MLB teams, including the Chicago White Sox and the Seattle Mariners. He was also known for his close relationship with several high-profile baseball players, including Joe Torre, Tony La Russa, and Barry Bonds. Campbell passed away on April 9, 2018, at the age of 69. His contributions to the game of baseball are remembered by his former teammates, coaches, and players.
