Bill Donovan Autographs

William Joseph "Wild Bill" Donovan was an American pitcher, manager, and front-office executive in Major League Baseball (MLB). Born on October 13, 1876, he began his baseball career playing for his hometown in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Donovan's spectacular talent quickly caught the attention of the New York Giants, who signed him with a minimal contract to play for their Memphis Chicks team. He made his major league debut in 1903, pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals, where he spent the season. Donovan considered his time with the Detroit Tigers his most celebrated years, where he earned 183 wins while registering a .292 batting average as a hitter.
Wild Bill Donovan retired from playing professional baseball in 1917 after twenty seasons with a career record of 186-139, with an ERA of 2.69, 966 strikeouts, and 1875 innings pitched. After retiring from playing baseball, he became a successful baseball executive, serving as a general manager for the New York Yankees and later for the Boston Braves. Donovan also managed the Philadelphia Phillies and the Boston Red Sox teams, winning 441 games as a manager. He was inducted posthumously into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964, cementing his legacy as one of the most remarkable baseball players and managers of all time.
Bill Donovan's contributions to the baseball field go beyond his playing and managing days. During World War I, he served in the Army and ultimately became a general. Later, he was assigned to the Office of Strategic Services, the predecessor to the Central Intelligence Agency, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
