Gullickson went on to attend the University of Minnesota where he played college baseball for the Gophers. In 1977, he was drafted by the Montreal Expos as the second overall pick. The young pitcher quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with, earning a place on the All-Star team in his first full season. Gullickson continued to play for the Expos until 1984 when he signed with the Cincinnati Reds. He played with the Reds for four seasons, then signed with the New York Yankees in 1990, followed by one season with the Houston Astros. Gullickson retired from baseball in 1994 and returned to Minnesota.

Throughout his baseball career, Gullickson was known for his impressive fastball and his ability to strike out opposing batters. Over the span of 14 seasons, he accumulated 162 wins and 965 strikeouts. In addition to his impressive career statistics, Gullickson was also respected by his teammates and coaches for his leadership and work ethic on and off the field. Today, he is remembered as one of the most successful pitchers of his era and continues to be an inspiration to young baseball players around the world.
