He attended Nettleton High School before playing college baseball at East Central Community College in Decatur, Mississippi. Hall played for several teams throughout his 11-year MLB career, including the Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros, San Francisco Giants, and Baltimore Orioles. He was primarily a utility player, playing several different positions throughout his career, including second base, shortstop, third base, and outfield.

Hall's best season came in 2006 when he was the starting shortstop for the Milwaukee Brewers. He batted .270 with 35 home runs and 85 RBIs, earning him a spot on the National League All-Star team. He also won a Fielding Bible Award for his defensive prowess at shortstop. Despite battling injuries and declining performance in subsequent seasons, Hall remained a valuable utility player for several teams and retired in 2015 with a career batting average of .248 and 125 home runs.
