In his career, Bill Monbouquette played for the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, and San Francisco Giants. In 1963, he was named to the All-Star team and won the Sporting News Pitcher of the Year award. He also threw a no-hitter against the Chicago White Sox on August 1, 1962. Monbouquette retired in 1968, finishing his career with a record of 114 wins and 112 losses, a 3.68 ERA, and 1,071 strikeouts.

Despite being diagnosed with cancer in 1988, Bill Monbouquette continued to be involved in the baseball community. He coached in the minor leagues and was a pitching coach for the Milwaukee Brewers and Boston Red Sox. He also established the Bill Monbouquette Award, which is given out annually to a courageous New England baseball player who has overcome adversity.
