Born on October 30, 1898, in Atlanta, Georgia, Bill Terry was the first baseman for the New York Giants for more than a decade from 1923 to 1936. Terry's baseball career began in 1915 with the High Point Furniture team in the Carolina Association, where he was paid $50 each month. After struggling through minor league teams, he was discovered by John McGraw, the manager of New York Giants in 1923. Terry quickly became a key player for the Giants, winning the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in 1930. He was known for his incredible batting average and his ability to hit home runs, earning him the nickname "Memphis Bill."
