Billy Bean Autographs
Professional baseball player, Billy Bean, was born on May 11, 1964, in Santa Ana, California. Bean was a talented outfielder who played for the Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Diego Padres in a career that spanned from 1987 to 1995. Most of his success came while playing for the Padres in 1993, where he set a career-high batting average of .319 with seven home runs and 31 RBIs. Despite his success as a player, Bean is best known for his efforts as an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in professional sports.
After retiring from baseball, Bean began working as a Major League Baseball (MLB) executive. In 1999, he was hired as the assistant general manager for the Oakland Athletics. During his time with the A's, Bean was known for his use of data analytics in player evaluation and team strategy. He helped lead the team to several successful seasons, including a 2002 playoff appearance, despite having one of the lowest payrolls in the league.
In addition to his work in baseball, Bean is also an author and activist. In 2003, he published his memoir, "Going the Other Way," which chronicles his struggles with his sexuality as a professional athlete. In 2014, Bean was hired by MLB as its first Ambassador for Inclusion, a role he still holds today. In this position, he works to ensure that all players, coaches, and fans are treated with respect, regardless of their gender, race, or sexual orientation.
