Billy Hunter Autographs
Billy Hunter, born Gordon William Hunter on June 4, 1928, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, had a notable career in Major League Baseball as both a player and manager. He began his MLB playing career in 1953 as the starting shortstop for the St. Louis Browns, making the American League All-Star team that year. Hunter was part of baseball history as he hit the final home run for the Browns before they moved to Baltimore and became the Orioles in 1954. He later played for several teams, including the New York Yankees, where he was a member of the 1956 World Series championship team.
After his playing career ended in 1958, Hunter transitioned into coaching and managing. He served as the Baltimore Orioles' third-base coach for nearly 14 seasons, contributing to four American League championships and two World Series victories. In 1977, Hunter became the manager of the Texas Rangers, leading them to a strong finish that season. He continued as the Rangers' manager in 1978, but was fired near the end of the season despite a winning record.
Hunter's post-MLB career included a successful stint at Towson State University (now Towson University). From 1979 to 1988, he served as the head baseball coach, helping establish the program at the Division I level. He later became the university's athletic director from 1984 to 1995, overseeing significant achievements in various sports programs. In recognition of his contributions to baseball, Hunter was inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame in 1996.
