Boyd made his debut in the major leagues on April 19, 1951, with the Chicago White Sox. He quickly became a regular starter for the team and was a key contributor to their success in the 1950s. During his time with the White Sox, Boyd batted .298 with 23 home runs and 245 runs batted in. He was also known for his clutch hitting, often coming through in crucial situations.

In 1956, Boyd was traded to the Baltimore Orioles, where he continued to play for three seasons. Although he struggled at times with the Orioles, he still managed to put up respectable numbers, including a .301 batting average in 1957. Boyd retired from baseball in 1961 after a 10-year professional career. Despite his relatively short time in the major leagues, Boyd left a lasting impact on the game, particularly with his stellar defensive play at first base.
