Bob Bruce was born on May 8, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in Detroit's northern neighborhoods. Bruce began his professional baseball career in 1951 with the Baltimore Orioles organization. Bruce played for five teams during his career, including the Houston Astros, Cleveland Indians, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, and Milwaukee Brewers. He was best known for his time with the Astros, where he played from 1964-1967. In 1965, Bruce set the Astros' record for complete games, pitching 19 complete games out of his 36 starts. He led the National League in shutouts that same year, with five. Bruce was also known for his impressive fastball and curveball pitches.

After retiring from baseball in 1971, Bruce returned to Michigan and became a successful businessman. He opened his own insurance agency and was active in local baseball communities, serving as a coach and umpire. Bruce passed away on November 15, 2018, at the age of 85.
