Conley's baseball career began in the minor leagues, where he played for the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Conley made his Major League debut with the Giants in 1958, and he played in 16 games in his rookie season. He finished with a 4-7 record, a 4.69 ERA, and 32 strikeouts. In 1959, Conley pitched for the Milwaukee Braves, and he had his best season, finishing with a record of 11-7, a 3.42 ERA, and 120 strikeouts. He was also named the National League Rookie of the Year that year. Conley's career came to an end in 1963 when he pitched his last game for the Philadelphia Phillies.

After his baseball career, Conley worked as a real estate developer and businessman. He also became involved in politics and served as a city councilman in San Diego in the 1970s. Conley passed away on May 1, 2017, at the age of 83. He will always be remembered as a talented left-handed pitcher who had a successful career in the Major Leagues, especially during his impressive rookie season with the Milwaukee Braves.
