In 1975, Davis was selected by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round of the Major League Baseball draft. He made his MLB debut with the Padres in 1977 and played for them until 1980. Davis then played for the Kansas City Royals from 1981 to 1985, where he helped the team win the 1985 World Series. He finished his career playing for the Seattle Mariners in 1986.

Davis was known for his defensive prowess behind the plate. He was an excellent catcher who could throw out baserunners with ease. He was also a solid hitter and finished his career with a .249 batting average and 21 home runs. After retiring from baseball, Davis went on to work as a scout for various MLB teams, including the New York Mets and Texas Rangers. He will always be remembered as a skilled and hard-working athlete who made significant contributions to the sport of baseball.
