Bob Friend was a professional baseball pitcher who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1950 to 1965. Born in Lafayette, Indiana in 1930, Friend attended Purdue University where he played college baseball. He signed with the Pirates in 1948 and after a couple of years in the minors he made his major league debut in 1950 at the age of 20. He quickly established himself as a talented pitcher, setting several records and earning numerous awards over the course of his 16-year career. More about Bob Friend

After his playing career ended, Friend worked in broadcasting and coaching. He was inducted into the Indiana Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 1999. He passed away in 2019 at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest pitchers in Pirates history. In recognition of his achievements, the Pirates retired his number 19 jersey in 2018, making him one of only 12 players to receive this honor in franchise history.
