Rush distinguished himself as a pitcher during his baseball career, earning a reputation as a hard-throwing, intimidating player. He was known for his high-velocity fastball and his ability to strike batters out. Rush had a successful career, compiling a 127-152 record with a 3.65 ERA and 1,165 strikeouts over 13 seasons. Rush's best season came in 1952, when he won 17 games for the Cubs and struck out 139 batters.

Rush retired from baseball in 1960 after playing with the White Sox in his final season. After retiring, Rush worked as a scout and pitching coach. He was inducted into the Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame in 1981 and passed away on March 19, 1994, in Tucson, Arizona, at the age of 68. Despite playing in an era without the numerical handicaps of the modern game, Rush established himself as one of the most dominant pitchers of his era.
