Bob Schmidt was born on May 26, 1933, in Payette, Idaho. He was a professional baseball player who played 11 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a catcher for the Milwaukee Braves, Houston Colt .45s, and Detroit Tigers. He made his MLB debut with the Milwaukee Braves in 1958, and he played 4 seasons with the team, where he was known for his solid defense and strong arm. In 1962, Schmidt was traded to the Houston Colt .45s, where he played for 3 seasons. He had his best offensive season in 1963 when he hit .293 with 11 home runs and 49 RBI. He was also named an All-Star that season, and he helped lead the Colt .45s to their first winning season in franchise history. In 1965, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers, where he played his final 4 seasons before retiring after the 1970 season. During his career, Schmidt was known for his strong arm and defensive skills, and he was considered one of the best defensive catchers of his era.

After his playing career, Schmidt became a manager in the minor leagues, and he also served as a coach for the Detroit Tigers and Milwaukee Brewers. He was inducted into the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988, and he also served as a scout for the Tigers and Brewers. Schmidt passed away on August 29, 2019, at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy as one of the best defensive catchers in MLB history.
