Bob Stanley, a former Major League Baseball pitcher and coach, was born in 1954 in Portland, Maine. He played high school baseball and attended college at the University of Southern Maine, where he played on the school's team. In 1974, Stanley was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the third round of the amateur draft. It was the start of an exceptional baseball career that would span 13 seasons, all with the Red Sox. Stanley was primarily a relief pitcher for the Red Sox, but he was one of the best in the league. He became known as a workhorse who could pitch long innings and throw strikes. He made his Major League debut in 1977 and quickly established himself as a key member of Boston's bullpen. Stanley played on several Red Sox teams that were competitive in the American League, but he never won a World Series championship.
