Welch was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first round of the 1977 amateur draft. By 1978, he was in the majors, and he quickly became one of the Dodgers' most reliable starters. He won the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1978 after posting a 7-4 record with a 2.02 ERA.
