Boots Poffenberger Autograph
Boots Poffenberger was an American professional baseball player born on June 24, 1915, in Williamsport, Maryland. He began his professional baseball career with the Hagerstown Hubs in the Maryland State League in 1934. After a brief spell with Trenton and Harrisburg, Poffenberger signed with Detroit Tigers in 1936. He made his major league debut with Tigers on May 12, 1937, against St. Louis Browns. In his rookie season, he finished with 8-5, 2.38 ERA, and 53 strikeouts in 134.1 innings, helping the Tigers win the American League Pennant. Off the field, Poffenberger was known for his wild and unpredictable behavior. He once blasted a shotgun outside a hotel in Chicago and was caught smoking marijuana twice, resulting in his suspension from baseball for 60 days in 1939. Boots Poffenberger died on September 1, 1999, in Martinsburg, West Virginia, at the age of 84.
