After several years in the minor leagues, Harris made his MLB debut in 2004 with the Montreal Expos. He went on to play for several other teams including the Washington Nationals, Cincinnati Reds, Tampa Bay Rays, Minnesota Twins, and Los Angeles Angels. Throughout his career, Harris played primarily as a middle infielder but also saw some time at third base and in the outfield. In total, he played in 543 games in the MLB and had a career batting average of .256 while hitting 35 home runs and driving in 195 runs.

After retiring from professional baseball, Harris continued to stay involved in the sport by coaching and scouting for various organizations. In 2018, he was named the director of player development for the Los Angeles Angels, a role in which he oversees the organization's minor league affiliates and helps to develop young players for the big leagues.
