Butler played for five different teams over his 17-year Major League Baseball career, starting with the Atlanta Braves in 1981 and ending with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1997. Butler's baseball career began in earnest in 1979, when he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 23rd round of the amateur draft. After working his way through the minor leagues, Butler made his MLB debut with the Braves in 1981. He quickly established himself as a solid defensive outfielder, and he earned his first Gold Glove award in 1987. In addition to his defensive prowess, Butler was also a skilled base runner, stealing 558 bases over his career and leading the National League in stolen bases in 1991 and 1992.

In addition to his time with the Braves and Dodgers, Butler also played for the Cleveland Indians, San Francisco Giants, and New York Mets during his career. After retiring from playing, he briefly worked as a coach for the Milwaukee Brewers and was later inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his achievements on the field.
