He attended Eastern Michigan University where he played college baseball, leading the team with a .388 batting average during his freshman year. In 2004, Bixler was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second round of the MLB draft, beginning his professional baseball career.
Bixler spent several years in the Pirates' minor league system, earning various awards, including the organization's Minor League Player of the Year award in 2006.
