Brian Downing

Brian Downing is a former American professional baseball player who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for over 20 years, primarily as a catcher and designated hitter. He was born on October 9, 1950, in Los Angeles, California, and was signed by the Chicago White Sox in 1969 as a free agent. Downing made his MLB debut with the White Sox in 1973 and spent five seasons with them before being traded to the California Angels in 1978. More about Brian Downing

Downing had a successful baseball career, finishing with a .267 batting average, 275 home runs, and 1,073 runs batted in (RBI). He was named to the American League All-Star team in 1979, 1981, and 1982. Downing is also remembered for his role in the 1986 American League Championship Series when he hit a game-winning three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 5 to force a Game 6. The Angels ultimately lost the series to the Boston Red Sox, but Downing's clutch hit remains one of the biggest moments in Angels' postseason history.

After retiring from baseball in 1992, Downing became a coach for the Angels and worked as a hitting instructor. He was inducted into the Angels Hall of Fame in 2009 and is also a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. Downing's contributions to baseball have solidified his legacy as one of the finest players of his generation.
