Hunter began his professional baseball career when he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the second round of the 1989 MLB draft. He made his debut in the big leagues with the Braves in 1991 and played for them until 1996. During his time with the Braves, he was known for his speed and was a valuable asset on the basepaths. In 1997, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers, where he continued to excel as a base stealer.
