Brien Taylor was born on December 26, 1971, in Beaufort, North Carolina. He attended East Carteret High School where he was a standout pitcher. In 1991, Taylor was selected as the number one overall draft pick by the New York Yankees. Taylor played his first professional season with the Gulf Coast Yankees where he had an impressive 2.57 ERA in 12 games. He continued to progress through the minors, and in 1993, he was invited to major league camp. However, before he could make his major league debut, Taylor suffered a shoulder injury in a bar fight which ended his career. Despite never playing a single inning in the majors, Taylor remains one of the most hyped players in baseball history.

After his baseball career ended, Taylor struggled with alcohol and substance abuse issues, and in 2012, he was sentenced to 38 months in prison for drug trafficking. Despite his legal troubles, Taylor has remained involved with baseball, often coaching local youth teams in North Carolina. His success in high school and his short but memorable minor league career still leave many wondering what could have been if he had fulfilled his potential in the majors.
