Bruce Hurst was born on March 24, 1958, in St. George, Utah. He is a retired American Major League Baseball player, who played for the Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies, and Texas Rangers, as a left-handed pitcher. Hurst attended Dixie State College before transferring to BYU, where he played for the Cougars. After college, he was drafted by the Red Sox in the first round of the 1976 MLB draft. Hurst started his professional baseball career with the Elmira Pioneers in the New York-Penn League. In 1982, he made his debut with the Boston Red Sox, where he went 8-8 with a 3.44 ERA in 27 games in his rookie season. However, Hurst's breakout year was in 1986, arguably his best season, where he went 13-8 with a 2.99 ERA and was instrumental in taking the Red Sox to the World Series, where they ultimately lost to the New York Mets.
