Cal Koonce Autographs
Cal Koonce was an American professional baseball player born on November 18, 1940, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He attended Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina, before joining the Chicago Cubs organization in 1960. Koonce played for several minor league teams before making his major league debut with the Cubs in 1962.
Over the course of his career, Koonce became known for his strong pitching ability and versatility, often moving between relief pitcher and starting pitcher roles. He played for the Cubs from 1962 to 1968, during which time he had a career-high 15 wins in 1966. Koonce was then traded to the New York Mets in 1968, where he pitched in their famous World Series-winning season in 1969. He played for the Mets until 1970, when he was traded to the Washington Senators. Koonce retired from baseball in 1971, finishing his career with a 68-70 record and a 3.78 ERA.
After retiring from baseball, Koonce returned home to North Carolina and ran his own trucking business. His love for the sport of baseball never waned, however, and he regularly attended events and reunions with former teammates. In 2002, Koonce was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport. Today, he is remembered as a talented and hardworking athlete who dedicated himself to the game of baseball.
