Carl Willey Autographs
Carl Willey was an American professional baseball player born on June 6, 1931, in Cherryfield, Maine. He was known for his fiery fastball, deceptive curveballs, and excellent control, which made him a force to be reckoned with on the mound. In 1958, he made his debut in the Major Leagues with the Milwaukee Braves, and over his ten-year career, he also played for the New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Houston Astros.
Willey's best season came in his rookie year with the Milwaukee Braves, where he went 8-8 with a 2.94 ERA in 24 games, including 14 starts. Despite struggling with injuries throughout his career, he still managed to finish with a career record of 41-46, and an ERA of 3.66 over 779 innings pitched. In addition, he also recorded 467 strikeouts and 34 complete games during his tenure in Major League Baseball.
After his playing days were over, Willey became a scout for the New York Mets, where he discovered talented players such as John Stearns, Kevin Mitchell, and Lenny Dykstra. He also served as a coach and instructor for many years before retiring in 2004. Willey passed away on September 23, 2009, at the age of 78. His legacy as a talented pitcher and passionate mentor continues to live on in the baseball community.
