Charlie Root's most infamous moment in his baseball career came in game three of the 1932 World Series. He was the starting pitcher for the Cubs, and a young, unproven slugger by the name of Babe Ruth was at bat. In the fifth inning, Root threw a high fastball that Ruth sent into the center-field seats. The crowd at Wrigley Field was roaring, and Ruth gestured towards Root with his bat, as if to predict the home run. Root claims that Ruth was only pointing at center field, but the era of sports myth-making has created a different story. Nevertheless, Root bounced back and pitched well in the game, retiring the next eight Yankees he faced.

Root's career ended in 1946, and he became a successful baseball coach in the minor leagues. In 1965, he was inducted into the Ohio Baseball Hall of Fame. He passed away in 1970 in Hollister, California. Root's career will always be remembered as one of the most successful pitching careers in Chicago Cubs history.
