Chief Bender Autographs
Charles Albert Bender, better known as Chief Bender, was a Native American baseball player who was born on May 5, 1884, in Crow Wing County, Minnesota. He played in the major leagues as a pitcher for 16 years from 1903-1917. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest pitchers in the early 20th century and is one of the few Native American players to have had a successful career in the major leagues.
Bender had a remarkable control over the ball and was best known for his curveball, which he used to great effect against his opponents. He played with the Philadelphia Athletics for 10 years and was an integral part of the team that won four American League pennants and three World Series championships. Bender played in the World Series in 1905, 1910, 1911, and 1913, and was particularly impressive in the 1910 series against the Chicago Cubs.
Bender was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953, and his career statistics are still impressive today. Throughout his career, he won 212 games while losing only 127, with 1,711 strikeouts in 3,323 innings pitched. In addition to his impressive pitching record, he also had a career batting average of .220 and was known for his excellent base-running abilities. Bender's legacy as a Native American trailblazer in the major leagues continues to inspire young players, and he will always be remembered as one of the greatest pitchers of all time.
