Born on December 18, 1986, in Redwood City, California, Carter was a standout athlete in high school, where he excelled in both baseball and football. Carter played college baseball at Stanford for three years, where he was a two-time All-Pac-10 selection and a two-time All-American. He was then selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 15th round of the 2008 MLB Draft, and he quickly worked his way through the minor leagues, making his Major League debut with the Athletics in 2010.
