Coghlan made his MLB debut in August 2009 with the Marlins, and he quickly established himself as a talented outfielder. In his rookie year, he hit .321 in 128 games and won the National League Rookie of the Year award. He continued to play for the Marlins for five seasons, during which he was mostly an outfielder but also played some second base. He had a batting average of .268 with 28 home runs and 137 RBIs in 504 games for the Marlins.

Coghlan also played for the Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, and Toronto Blue Jays during his MLB career. He won a World Series title with the Cubs in 2016, playing in 48 games for the team that season. In total, he played in 807 MLB games, with a career batting average of .258, 52 home runs, and 229 RBIs.
