Tanner's true impact on the sport came during his time as a manager. In 1970, he took over the Chicago White Sox and led them to a second-place finish before taking the Oakland Athletics to the playoffs in his first season with the team in 1972. But it was as the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates that Tanner truly made his mark. He was hired in 1977 and won an NL East title in his first season, leading the Pirates to their first World Series championship since 1960 the following year. Tanner managed the Pirates through the 1985 season, accumulating 711 wins and 691 losses and cementing his place as one of the most beloved and respected figures in Pittsburgh sports history.

In addition to his managerial accomplishments, Tanner was known for his infectious personality and positive attitude. He was renowned for his tireless work ethic and his ability to connect with and motivate his players. Tanner passed away on February 11, 2011, but his legacy lives on both as a player and a manager, and he will always be remembered as a true ambassador of the game of baseball.
