Cito Gaston Autographs
Clarence Edwin "Cito" Gaston was born on March 17, 1944. He is a retired Major League Baseball player, coach and manager. Gaston was born in Texas and grew up in California. He attended San Francisco City College before signing with the Atlanta Braves in 1964, launching his professional baseball career.
Gaston had an all-star playing career. Over his 10 years in the major leagues, he played for the Atlanta Braves, San Diego Padres, and Chicago Cubs. In his career, he batted .256 with 91 home runs and 387 RBI. He was known as an outstanding defensive outfielder, earning a Gold Glove award in 1970. Gaston also led the National League with 11 triples in 1971.
Gaston's greatest success in baseball, however, came as a manager. After serving as a hitting coach and farm system administrator with the Padres, Gaston was named manager of the Toronto Blue Jays prior to the 1989 season. Under his leadership, the Blue Jays won back-to-back World Series championships in 1992 and 1993, becoming the first team outside of the United States to win the title. He was also the first Black manager to win a World Series. Gaston led the Blue Jays for 12 seasons, compiling a 894-837 record before retiring from managing in 2010. He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002.
