In 1972, Johnson made his Major League debut with the Houston Astros and played for them until 1977. During his time with the Astros, he was primarily used as a pinch hitter and played as a first baseman and catcher. Johnson's career truly took off when he was traded to the New York Yankees in 1977, where he played for four seasons. He hit 20 or more home runs in each of his four seasons with the Yankees and was known for his power hitting abilities. Johnson also played for the Cleveland Indians, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, and the Chicago Cubs before retiring in 1986.

Throughout his baseball career, Cliff Johnson hit a total of 196 home runs, with a batting average of .267. He was known for his powerful swing and was a valuable asset to the teams he played for. After retiring from baseball, Johnson went on to work as a batting coach for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Houston Astros. Today, he is remembered as one of the most talented power hitters of his time, and his contributions to the game of baseball will always be celebrated.
