Courtney made his Major League debut in 1951 with the New York Yankees, and later played for the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Senators. While playing for the Orioles in 1954, he made a name for himself with his superb defensive abilities. Courtney was known for his aggressive and physical style of play, with one player describing him as a "human backstop". Despite his defensive prowess, Courtney's batting average was rather modest, only hitting .268 in his ten-year career.

In addition to his time on the field, Courtney was also well-known for his sense of humor and outgoing personality. He was known to keep his teammates laughing in the dugout and was described as a "clubhouse jester". Courtney passed away on December 9, 1975, due to a heart attack. Despite his modest offensive statistics, Courtney's reputation as one of the best defensive catchers of his time has endured. He was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1970.
