Ryan first gained attention as a high school baseball star in New Orleans, then went on to play at LSU before signing with the Boston Braves in 1940. He made his major league debut on April 24, 1942, at the age of 22. Ryan played for the Braves until 1946 when he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Over the course of his ten-year career, Ryan played for several teams, including the New York Giants and the Cincinnati Reds. He was named to the National League All-Star team in 1944 and was a member of the 1948 Boston Braves team that won the National League pennant. Connie Ryan retired from professional baseball in 1954 with a career batting average of .256, 524 hits, and 20 home runs.
