Flood is best remembered for his role in challenging baseball's reserve clause. This clause stated that a player could not become a free agent until they were released or traded by their team. Flood refused to be traded from the Cardinals to the Phillies in 1969, challenging the reserve clause and starting a legal battle that would last for several years. Flood made the difficult decision to sit out the entire 1970 season rather than play for the Phillies. Although he eventually lost his case in the Supreme Court, his efforts led to the end of the reserve clause and paved the way for today's free agency system, making him a hero for all athletes.

Curt Flood was inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014, his impact on the game of baseball still felt to this day. Read even more about Curt Flood at Wikipedia
