Curt Simmons was born on May 19, 1929, in Egypt, Pennsylvania. He was a left-handed pitcher who played in Major League Baseball for seventeen seasons from 1947 to 1967. After being signed by the Philadelphia Phillies at the age of 16, Simmons began his professional baseball career in 1947. Simmons posted impressive numbers in his rookie season, recording a 17-8 win-loss record with a 3.41 ERA. He went on to have six seasons with 14 or more wins in his career, including a career-best record of 18-8 in 1953. Simmons was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1960, and after spending parts of three seasons there, he was traded back to the Phillies in 1964.
