Darrel Akerfelds Autographs
Darrel Akerfelds was a former Major League Baseball (MLB) player and coach. Born on June 12, 1962, in Denver, Colorado, Akerfelds attended Columbine High School and later joined Mesa Community College in Arizona. He was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the first round of the secondary phase of the MLB Draft in 1983. Akerfelds played as a right-handed pitcher and made his MLB debut for the Oakland Athletics in 1986.
Akerfelds played for multiple MLB teams throughout his career, including the Athletics, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, and Philadelphia Phillies. He finished his playing career in 1991 with a record of 9-10 and an ERA of 5.08. In 1992, Akerfelds transitioned into coaching and became a minor league pitching coach for the San Diego Padres organization. He served as the bullpen coach for the Padres from 2001 to 2011 and held the position of interim pitching coach in 2009. Akerfelds was known for his outstanding work with young pitchers and helped develop many successful players, including Trevor Hoffman and Heath Bell.
Akerfelds was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2010 and continued to work as the Padres bullpen coach during his treatment. He passed away on June 24, 2012, at the age of 50. In his memory, the Padres created the Darrel Akerfelds Award, which is given annually to "the player who best represents the courage, determination, and perseverance of the former Padres bullpen coach."
