Dave Beard Autographs
Dave Beard was a professional baseball pitcher who played in Major League Baseball from 1980 to 1989. He was born on October 2, 1959, in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Beard attended High School in Tucker, Georgia, and later went on to play college baseball at Mercer University.
Beard was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the first round (19th overall) of the 1978 Major League Baseball draft. He made his MLB debut on May 31, 1980, against the Baltimore Orioles. Beard's best season came in 1982, where he had a 2.66 earned run average (ERA) and 16 saves, helping the Athletics win the American League Western Division. He made five appearances in the 1982 American League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, allowing no runs and recording two saves. Beard played for the Athletics until 1985, where he was then traded to the Seattle Mariners. He finished his career with the Detroit Tigers in 1989.
Over his ten-year career, Beard had a 3.54 ERA, recorded 29 wins, and collected 115 saves. He was a key contributor to the Oakland A's success in the early 1980s, and his outstanding performance in the 1982 American League Championship Series earned him the nickname "Smoke." After retiring from baseball, Beard became a real estate agent in Atlanta, Georgia.
