Campbell was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the third round of the 1963 MLB draft and went on to play for the Giants, Houston Astros, and St. Louis Cardinals during his 13-year career. He was known for his versatility, as he played every position except pitcher and catcher during his time in the majors. Despite not being a star player, Campbell was highly respected by his teammates and coaches for his work ethic, positive attitude, and willingness to do whatever was asked of him.

After retiring from playing, Campbell became a broadcaster and has worked for several teams, including the Texas Rangers and ESPN. He is known for his insightful analysis, easygoing demeanor, and dry sense of humor. Campbell has also written several books about baseball, including his memoir, "Dave Campbell's Legends of Baseball," which was published in 2015. His contributions to the game as both a player and broadcaster have earned him a place in the Texas Rangers Hall of Fame and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.
