Rader made his MLB debut on July 12, 1972, and spent his first four seasons with the San Francisco Giants. He was a versatile player who primarily played catcher but also played third base, first base, and outfield. He was known for his defensive skills and strong throwing arm. In 1978, Rader was traded to the Houston Astros, where he had one of his best seasons, hitting .293 with 13 home runs and 79 RBI. He was also named an All-Star for the only time in his career that year. He ended his MLB career with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1982.

After retiring from baseball, Rader became a coach and manager. He served as the manager for the San Francisco Giants from 1985 to 1988, leading the team to second place in the National League West in 1987. He also served as a coach for the Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, and Kansas City Royals. Rader was known as a keen strategist and mentor to young players. He retired from coaching in 2006 to spend more time with his family but remains involved in baseball as a consultant and guest speaker.
