Carpenter played in the major leagues for six seasons, recording a 3.66 earned run average (ERA) and 10 saves across 229 innings pitched. He played for the Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays, Atlanta Braves, Washington Nationals, and the Texas Rangers. In 2013, he set a career-high in strikeouts with 74. Furthermore, in 2015, he posted an ERA of 2.63 and a 7.2 strikeouts per nine innings ratio before suffering a shoulder injury that ended his season.

After being released by the Rangers in 2017, Carpenter played for a year in the Mexican League before announcing his retirement in 2018. Although he never achieved the levels of stardom that some of his peers did, Carpenter proved to be a reliable reliever on multiple teams over his career, and his contributions to the game were no less significant for their consistency.
